DO always check the rechargeable batteries life and how much memory is available on the hardware. Software will need to be tested to make sure that information is not lost when power is temporarily lost.
DO check everything, compatibility needs to be tested for all hardware/software and back office.
DO keep an open mind, large software vendors can have off the shelf systems ready and will usually have solved a lot of the problems smaller companies will have. Smaller companies may be cheaper and more ready to develop new systems.
DO research business capabilities of the hardware. Information can be stored on the device or on the internet (by provider or company server) depending on connection and the security of the device memory/length of time it needs to be stored for.
DON'T assume that you are unique and need new software. You may be able to get a completely off the shelf system for the hardware and the software that you require. This will be a tried and tested solution and probably cheaper.
