Develop brief

DO analyse processes even if you don't end up implementing new IT communications. Any research can improve processes even before implementing the new solution.

DO get support before you start from all levels of the company. As the idea for the solution was started from the bottom and fully supported by the top, this solution seems to have been received enthusiastically by the whole company.

DO look at business needs first and then hardware capabilities. Costs and business needs should be looked into carefully before hardware is chosen. Some providers can offer much more variety of hardware than others tied into one provider.

DO look for ways to get more, better quality information. Many advantages are to the back office systems and the information saved for future use.

DO make sure all types of user are involved early in the specifications and testing as there may be a larger variation of user skills and attitudes than expected.

DO try to keep it simple. The digital pen is a success for simple forms and sketching/notes as you don't need to learn any new skills. People who have been asked to use very friendly solutions often try to use them for other applications as well.

DO use information to enlighten external clients as well. Remember results can be gained from reporting more information to clients/users/head office etc.

DON'T keep it to yourself. If you manage to get some of your major suppliers/subcontractors using the system then you can see greatly improved returns.

DON'T sell the technology as a gimmick. It's a tool. Sell the new process instead. Care needs to be taken to keep the image of the technology as a serious process improvement, not just a gimmick.

DON'T underestimate the use of up-to-date daily information. Any changes from weekly to daily information can show beneficial results even if the information is not seen as critical.
