Define specification
DO always check the rechargeable batteries life and how much memory is available on the hardware. Software will need to be tested to make sure that information is not lost when power is temporarily lost.
DO check the solution in the environment that it will be used in. Any use IT in the construction environment can have issues that haven't been thought of in development.
DO look at best and worst scenarios for usage of the solution. With any device small enough to carry around in your pocket there may be a security risk, there needs to be a system in place to get a new one to the staff before much work is lost.
DO look at business needs first and then hardware capabilities. Costs and business needs should be looked into carefully before hardware is chosen. Some providers can offer much more variety of hardware than others tied into one provider.
DO make sure all types of user are involved early in the specifications and testing as there may be a larger variation of user skills and attitudes than expected.
DO make sure you have answers to crucial questions: What happens if the system crashes? How long will it take to cause large problems and how long is the contract to fix it? Can you revert to the old system for a while?
DO research business capabilities of the hardware. Information can be stored on the device or on the internet (by provider or company server) depending on connection and the security of the device memory/length of time it needs to be stored for.
DO test systems, dont just assume that it will work because they say it will. Compatibility needs to be tested for all hardware/software and back office.
DONT just implement an IT communications solution in isolation. Any research can improve processes even before implementing the new solution.
