A CHALLENGE FOR OUR CONSTRUCTION MEMBERS FROM OUR TECHNOLOGY CHAIRMAN - IAIN MISKIMMIN
An issue was raised during the last community day that I would like your assistance with.
Each year millions of pounds of tools are written off by construction companies within the UK and I would like to see what COMIT can do about it.
The issue:-
Small tools management.
Loss or theft of small tools is potentially costing each construction company or contractor £10,000's every year.
Managing hired small tools and equipment on site is not an easy task. They need to be available for use on site when required, but also secured when not in use so that they are not damaged, lost or stolen. Defective tools and tools awaiting collection need to be identified so that these are not used and importantly tools that are no longer required are returned to the hire centre so that hire costs do not rack up. If tools are lost, stolen, damaged or unused and then not reported until the end of the project you not only have the cost for the write off of the equipment but have also incurred high hire costs. There is little incentive for a hire company to address this issue as our loss is their gain.
Whilst we are sure that, most construction companies have procedures that map out how site staff should manage the hire of small tools, the reality is that in practice this falls well short of what is required. It is difficult to track the physical location of the tools and not always possible to indentify who used it last.
What do I want from you?
I would like each of the construction members in COMIT to prepare a 10 minute presentation on how their organisation deals with this issue, to be delivered at the December community day.
If you have already solved it... Great!! Tell us how.
If you havent, please tell us how you are currently controlling this issue.
For example....
In my work with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, we book out tool kits for use in harsh environments and control the tools within the box using foam cut outs and paper check lists. I will present for less than 10 minutes on how we currently carry this out and how many tools have to be written off and the costs to the corps every year.
What next?
This will spawn a workshop on ideas of how we can tackle this issue and projects to trial new technologies that will help.
What about if this doesnt affect my company?
If your company doesnt use small tools, but you have other issues that you feel are costing you money, please say so and we will dedicate a community day to talking it through.
